The INFJ Avoidance List: Who We Steer Clear Of

Have you ever wondered what makes an INFJ tick—or, more accurately, what makes us run in the opposite direction? We’re often called “the rarest personality type,” and we tend to be picky about who we let into our lives. Based on feedback from INFJs, I’ve put together a list of the kinds of people they tend to avoid. This isn’t about being judgmental; it’s about protecting our energy and emotional well-being.

The Emotionally Draining

1. The Emotionally Obtuse: It can be exhausting to be around people who just don’t get it. We’re wired to feel what others feel, so it’s hard for us to connect with people who are rigid, unemotional, and dismissive of other people’s feelings. We value logic, but when it’s cold and completely detached from a person’s emotions, it feels alienating.

2. The Energy Vampires: You know the type—the ones who leave you feeling completely drained after just a few minutes. Whether it’s constant negativity, an incessant need for attention, or a monologue that never ends, these people are a major drain on our sensitive nature. We thrive on genuine, two-way conversations, not one-sided exchanges. Superficial chatter is just as bad; we crave depth and purpose, and small talk often feels like a waste of time.

The Inauthentic and Superficial

3. The Fake People: Authenticity is everything to an INFJ. We have a built-in radar for insincerity, and we’ll quickly distance ourselves from anyone who seems to be putting on an act. When you’re focused on deeper meanings, it’s hard to connect with people who are obsessed with appearances, money, or other shallow pursuits.

The Arrogant and Disrespectful

4. The Narcissists and the Entitled: This is a big one. Nothing clashes more with our sense of fairness and empathy than a person who is completely self-absorbed, lacks empathy, and feels entitled to special treatment. We’ll also quickly avoid anyone who is rude, aggressive, or quick to lie. The combination of arrogance, entitlement, and dishonesty is a massive red flag.

5. The Loud and Intrusive: We love our personal space. We need it to recharge and process our thoughts. People who don’t respect that boundary—the loud, intrusive, and attention-seeking types—can be overwhelming. Uncontrolled emotional outbursts and constant conflict are also deeply unsettling to us.

The Closed-Minded and Judgmental

6. The Rigid and Judgmental: INFJs are open-minded and love exploring different perspectives. We find it difficult to connect with people who are set in their ways and unwilling to see things from another point of view. A judgmental attitude is also a major turn-off; we’re much more interested in understanding than in criticizing.

The Manipulative and Negative

7. The Two-Faced and Toxic: We value transparency. When someone is sneaky or has a hidden agenda, it’s deeply unsettling. Likewise, constant negativity and toxic behavior are emotionally draining. We’re driven by a desire for harmony and positive growth, so we’ll naturally avoid those who seem to be motivated by negativity or self-interest.

In Conclusion

At the end of the day, an INFJ’s avoidance list boils down to a need for authenticity, empathy, and respect. We’re drawn to people who are genuine, kind, and open-minded—those who want to build meaningful connections. By understanding the people we avoid, you can get a better sense of what we truly value: a small, carefully chosen circle where we can feel safe, heard, and understood. It’s not about being exclusive; it’s about protecting our peace.ronment in which they can truly thrive.
